Thomas J. Danaher Leads Air Force Scientific Balloon Operations at Hanscom Field

While modern aerospace engineering often brings to mind supersonic flight and space exploration, scientific ballooning remains a critical and non-polluting cornerstone of environmental and technological research. Directing this specialized field from nearby Hanscom Field is Norwood resident Thomas J. Danaher of 83 Deerfield Road.

The Scale and Scope of Scientific Ballooning

As chief of the balloon flight requirements branch in the aerospace instrumentation laboratory at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories in Bedford—the sole Department of Defense agency handling balloon operations—Danaher oversees projects utilizing giant polyethylene balloons. Ranging from meteorological units to colossal structures larger than three football fields and taller than Boston’s John Hancock Building when fully expanded, these balloons are capable of lifting three-ton payloads into the stratosphere.

Operating with a remarkable 99 percent success rate, these free balloons ascend more than 30 miles, offering stable, economical, and zero-emission platforms for high-altitude research. Because they are non-polluting compared to aircraft, they have become invaluable tools for environmental monitoring.

Environmental Research and Ozone Tracking

In recent years, the primary focus of scientific ballooning has shifted toward ecological research. Danaher noted that balloons are extensively used to measure atmospheric pollutants—such as aerosol propellants and emissions from supersonic aircraft—that threaten the stratospheric ozone layer, which shields Earth from ultraviolet radiation. Measurements are routinely taken from eight miles up to hundreds of miles into the atmosphere.

International scientists and foreign governments frequently utilize American research facilities at Bedford, as well as New Mexico’s Holloman Air Force Base and California’s Chico Air Force Base, to gather data ranging from ozone pollution levels to stellar composition. Specialized balloon payloads even assist with deep-space missions, such as lifting platform units to the stratosphere where rockets take over to propel units toward Mars.

Thomas J. Danaher’s Illustrious Civil Service Career

A lifelong engineer and administrator, Danaher has dedicated his professional life to the program since joining the research laboratory in 1946 while studying at Northeastern University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering and a master’s degree in engineering management.

In recognition of his decades of civilian leadership spanning management, safety, engineering, and logistical support, Danaher was recently honored as the recipient of the fourth annual Commander’s Award at the Cambridge Research Laboratories. Though he travels less frequently to flight test sites in New Mexico and California today, Danaher remains deeply engaged in the evolving challenges of atmospheric research and ozone tracking.
