In June of 1968, the town learned that United States Marine Lance Corporal Richard Murphy, son of Police Chief James Murphy, had been killed in action in Vietnam several days earlier. He was 20 years old at the time of his death.

He was with 3rd Battalion 4th Marines, and was attached to Company M.

Murphy had been twice wounded before being killed. He had been recommended for the Vietnamese medal for gallantry in action at Hill 552.

Special thanks to Brian P. Murphy for additional information.
