In what stands as the premier high school football matchup across Eastern Massachusetts tomorrow afternoon, Norwood High School—ranked second in Division I—hits the road to face fourth-ranked Natick in a high-stakes battle of the unbeatens.

Both squads enter the contest with unblemished 3-0 records, sharing the Bay State League (BSL) lead alongside top-ranked Walpole.

Defensive Lockdown vs. Ground Power

The Mustangs arrive in Natick boasting a formidable defense that has pitched three consecutive shutouts, anchored by a capable offensive signal-caller in quarterback Peter Bowes.

Conversely, the Redmen counter with an explosive running game led by standout halfback Jim Yancey, who has already notched four touchdowns in three games, supported by Natick’s traditional abundance of large, powerful linemen. Although preseason expectations for Natick were modest, the Redmen—the only BSL team to capture a Super Bowl title (doing so in 1974)—have rolled off three straight victories over Winchester, Braintree, and Needham.

Norwood coach John Doherty expressed deep respect for tomorrow’s opponent while outlining a disciplined game plan. “Natick is a quick team,” Doherty explained, “with an exceptional running back in Jim Yancey. The club looks stronger on film than we had been led to believe. As much as we are impressed with Yancey, we will not key on him, at least we’re not planning to, because of several factors, one of which is the other runner, Mark Montgomery.”

Fine-Tuning the Mustang Offense

While Norwood’s recent football history proves the team can put points on the board in a hurry, this season’s scoring output has fluctuated—surging for 33 points in an earlier outing but limited to just six in last week’s victory over Wellesley.

Doherty, however, defended his offense’s execution. “We controlled the ball for eight straight minutes in the first period against Wellesley. That’s good offense, not bad offense. We’re not breaking the big play like we have in the past, but we have the capability to do it.”

Natick coach Bob Whelan acknowledged his team’s surprise surge. “We’ve been playing better than anyone expected. We only had four regulars coming back from last year, but the team attitude has been fantastic and I think that makes up for our inexperience.”

While Norwood features a balanced offensive attack, Natick has depended almost exclusively on its ground game. To prepare for the showdown, Redmen quarterback Jim Kane has been working extensively on his passing game during practice.

History favors a nail-biter: the last three meetings between these two fierce rivals have been decided by two points or less, and on paper, tomorrow’s clash promises to be just as tight.
