Three local teenagers were honored nationally for their heroic actions in rescuing an elderly woman from a burning home in June.
The National Fire Protection Association presented awards to John Siderwicz, 16, of 105 E. Cross St.; Todd Maxon, 18, of 45 Richland Road; and Brendan King, 16, of 83 Old Farm Road, during a ceremony at Battery march Park in Quincy.
Lieutenant Governor Thomas P. O’Neill III presented the awards before an estimated gathering of 90 attendees, drawing a standing ovation for the young men. The youths were driving past a home at 633 Neponset St. on June 29 when they spotted flames shooting from a rear window. Entering the burning residence, they found 85-year-old Laura Taylor in a confused state and safely guided her out of the house. The lifesaving rescue had previously earned the teenagers official commendations from selectmen the preceding month.
