Kiwanis Club Packs Norwood Theatre for Annual Sports Show; Junior High Boxers Highlight the Card
The Norwood Theatre was filled to capacity Tuesday night as sports fans from across town turned out for the annual Kiwanis Club Sports Show, an event that has become one of the community’s most anticipated spring traditions. The evening featured a full program of athletic exhibitions, demonstrations, and contests, but it was the boxing bouts—always a crowd favorite—that brought the loudest cheers.
One of the featured matches of the night pitted two promising young fighters from Norwood Junior High School against one another: Jimmy Kerr and Tony “Killer” Kane, both competing in the 135‑pound class. In one dramatic moment captured by photographer Eugene McLean, Kerr was knocked down but clearly “not out,” drawing enthusiastic applause from the packed house as he rose to continue the bout.
Overseeing the action inside the ring was veteran referee Johnny Murray, whose steady presence and sharp eye kept the spirited contest under control.
The Kiwanis Sports Show has long served as a showcase for Norwood’s young athletes, giving them a chance to perform before a large audience while raising funds for community programs supported by the Kiwanis Club. Tuesday night’s turnout—standing room only—demonstrated once again the town’s deep enthusiasm for local sports and its pride in the achievements of its youth.
As the crowd filed out of the Norwood Theatre after the final bell, the talk was already turning to next year’s show—and to the future prospects of young boxers Kerr and Kane, whose spirited performance left fans eager to see more.
