Professor Jean V. Dethier Honored at Norwood High Awards Assembly as He Concludes 28 Years of Service

NORWOOD — June 1, 1959 — A standing ovation filled the auditorium at Norwood High School on Monday afternoon as students, faculty, and administrators gathered for the annual Awards Assembly, a ceremony that this year carried special significance. After twenty‑eight years of distinguished service as Supervisor of Music in the Norwood Public Schools, Professor Jean V. Dethier was honored by the student body in a heartfelt tribute marking his upcoming retirement.

The presentation took place before a packed audience of students from all grade levels. Representing the entire student body were four student leaders who took part in the ceremony:

  • Richard Bunker, President of the Senior Class
  • John Doyle, President of the Junior Class
  • Marcia Pelletier, Vice President of the Sophomore Class
  • Valmore Pelletier, President of the Student Council

It was Valmore Pelletier who stepped forward to present Professor Dethier with a check on behalf of the students, a gesture of gratitude for nearly three decades of musical leadership, instruction, and inspiration.

A photograph taken by Eugene McLean captured the moment, showing Professor Dethier surrounded by the student leaders who represented the thousands of young people whose lives he has influenced through music education.

A Legacy of Music in Norwood

Professor Dethier’s retirement marks the close of an era in Norwood’s cultural and educational life. Over his twenty‑eight years in the school system, he built a music program known for its excellence, discipline, and spirit. Under his guidance, countless students learned not only the fundamentals of music but also the joy of performance and the value of artistic expression.

His leadership extended beyond the classroom, shaping school concerts, community performances, and the musical traditions that have become part of Norwood’s identity.

A New Chapter Ahead

At the end of the current school year, Professor Dethier and his wife will leave Norwood to make their new home in Blue Hill, Maine, where he will begin his well‑earned retirement.

Though he will no longer be present in the rehearsal rooms and auditoriums of Norwood’s schools, his influence will continue to resonate in every student who learned to sing, play, or appreciate music under his direction.

A Fitting Tribute

Monday’s ceremony served not only to honor academic achievement but also to celebrate a man whose dedication helped shape generations of Norwood students. As Professor Dethier accepted the students’ gift, the applause that filled the auditorium reflected the deep affection and respect he has earned throughout his long and distinguished career.
