Shot Shatters Windshield Of Car As Driver Ignores Gunman’s Order

A serviceman who formerly lived in Norwood and his woman companion escaped from two masked, bandits who confronted them with a revolver at the beachhead at Willett Pond at 2 30 yesterday morning.

The hold-up men, one carrying a revolver, approached the parked vehicle and ordered the serviceman to get out of the car. Instead, the driver put the car in reverse and sped away. A shot was fired which penetrated the windshield of the car, just missing the heads of the young couple. The girl was cut by flying glass.

The couple drove to the Norwood Police Station and reported the attempted robbery Sgt. Thomas McNulty and Officer George Sanborn immediately searched the area but could find no one.

The intended victims were not able to furnish the police with a very accurate description of the hold-up men, but believe the man wielding the revolver was of medium-slight build, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, with brown curly hair. He was wearing a light brown suit coat. Both are believed to be young, and neither wore a hat.

Chief Thomas C. Lydon and Sgt. Mark Folan and Officer George Sanborn were continuing the investigation this morning, but reported no new developments up until noon today.

The identity of the couple was withheld pending a further investigation of the case.

The Willett Pond area has long been a mecca for parkers, and robberies and attempted robberies of this nature have taken place there in the past. Some of these crimes, however, have not been reported to police, it is stated, because the victims feared the ‘disclosure of their identity.
