Sgt. Anthony J. Scafuri, of 7 Atwood Avenue, Norwood, has been commended for outstanding performance of duty as a military escort in the program of returning American war dead, the Army has announced at the New York Pori of Embarkation.
The commendation was in recognition of Sgt. Scafuri’s service in escorting the remains of American servicemen who died overseas in the last war and who have been returned here for final burial.
According to the Army, Sgt. Scafuri and other specially trained military escorts accompany each deceased serviceman from New York to the place of final burial selected by next of kin. After contacting the family on arriving at the serviceman’s hometown, the escorting soldier offers his services and presents the country’s flag to the next of kin at the conclusion of the graveside service.
