Norwood High’s victorious Golden Nuggets are urged by many of their faithful followers to beware of those Milton ‘Whiz Kids’ who may be “up” for an upset try Saturday night at the Boston Arena as our boys go after their tenth consecutive victory of the season.
Norwood defeated Milton 2-0 in their first meeting and expect to make two straight. But if there’s any trouble coming, it will be off the sticks of players such as center Joe Bottari. wingers Dave Marad and Jim Mahoney, who have propelled the Whiz kids over some rough ice this season.
Coach Bob Pederson’s unit ‘tripped’ Norwood last year when it was least expected. And the game Saturday night could be another to spoil the perfect record that Norwood has to its credit.
Local fans warn Milton that Capt. Charles Donahue is the team’s stabilizing influence. The three-year veteran hasn’t had any top billing so far, but his efforts are ever-present. He’s been Coach Jack Monbouquelte’s best bet.
Jim Pessick, Norwoods other star defenseman, rightfully earned the respect of other players. He has a real hard check, can stick handle his way the length of the ice.
Donahue and Jessick arc well- seasoned. They go all out for goalie Don Smith who now has six shutouts to his credit. Norwood’s Mr. Zero never quits on himself, or on his mates.
Up front, two well-playing lines have carried the fight to all Bay State League comers. Walt Nally, Ken Arvidson, and Dave McCue for one line, Albie Crowell, Rick Armour and Wayne Pctrovek on the other.
For years Norwood has chased the other teams, this year it’s another story as the others are looking up to perhaps the finest Norwood team in recent seasons.
In other games Saturday, Framingham meets Natick, Wellesley could have enough to whip Dedham and Walpole will be called upon to face Needham.
Johnson Out
Paul Johnson, crafty cantar on the Norwood High hockey team, has suffered an ankle fracture and will be out for possibly the balance of the regular season.
Andy Scafatl, Director of Athletics, reports Johnson may be back in action by State Tourney late this month.
