The Norwood baseball team’s victory over Walpole was a wild ride that saw 14 Walpole batters strike out and nine others walk.
The game started with Norwood scoring twice in the first, four times in the second, and three more times in the third, seemingly putting them on route to a romp. However, Walpole fought back, scoring three runs in the fourth to get back into the game.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with Norwood starting strong but Walpole fighting back. The Norwood team’s victory was due in part to the efforts of their starter, Dave McMullen, who struck out the sides in both the first and third innings. However, he lost control in the fourth, allowing Walpole to score three runs and get back into the game.
The tension escalated when Bob Bonner came to the plate, with a fan heckling him from the stands. McMullen turned and threw the baseball at the fan, but White pulled him down to the ground before things got out of hand. When peace was restored, McMullen was gone, replaced by reliever Jim Connolly.
Connolly walked in the first batter he faced and wild-pitched another Norwood runner home, scoring the third run for Norwood. The Walpole team’s frustration grew as they struck out 14 times, with nine other batters walking. Their coach, Ralph White, expressed his disappointment at their performance, saying that they “have to get the ball in play to score runs.”
In contrast, the Norwood team was pleased with their victory, with Coach Frank Wall stating that the walks issued by Norwood’s pitchers had “killed us” in the game. Despite losing three of their pitchers to injuries, Walpole still managed to put up a good fight, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to pull within two.
The final score read 11-8 in favor of Norwood, but it was clear that the real story was not just about the numbers on the scoreboard. It was about the drama and tension that played out on the field, with both teams giving their all in a thrilling display of baseball.
