As Norwood public schools grapple with declining student populations, the special panel charged with evaluating the system’s long-range facility and structural needs announced it will submit an initial progress report to the School Committee in October, followed by final recommendations in January. Panel Chairman Ted Hansberry clarified during a meeting last night that the October update will summarize eight months of ongoing research without including specific adaptation proposals.
The comprehensive final report due in January will directly address grade configurations and determine whether any school buildings must be shuttered due to shrinking enrollments, including specific closure recommendations if deemed necessary. The School Committee retains the ultimate authority to accept, reject, or modify the panel’s proposals.
Evaluating Grade Configurations and System-Wide Efficiency
Newly appointed Superintendent of Schools James R. Savage praised the planning committee’s thorough approach, stating he has “a lot of confidence” in their work and will defer his own administrative recommendations until the final report is delivered. “When you make a mistake, you have to live with it for a long time,” Savage noted, commending the group for avoiding hasty decisions. School Committee Chairman Joseph Pentowski added that the session strongly reaffirmed the administration’s support for the panel, which is composed primarily of school faculty and Parent-Teacher Association representatives.
To gather critical administrative feedback, the committee scheduled a September 13 working meeting with local principals and school administrators. Discussions will center on five distinct grade configurations currently under review:
- Traditional lineup: K-6, 7-9, 10-12
- Alternative elementary shift: K-5, 6-8, 9-12
- Middle school adjustment: K-6, 7-8, 9-12
- Expanded intermediate tier: K-4, 5-8, 9-12
- Junior high configuration: K-5, 6-9, 10-12
In addition to grade structures, the panel is analyzing enrollment projections, facility maintenance costs, special needs program space requirements, transportation expenses, and the feasibility of relocating the Henry O. Peabody School to free up additional space at Norwood High School.
