School Committee Weighs Historic First Night Football Game-August 31, 1963

The Norwood School Committee is actively investigating the logistics and feasibility of hosting the town’s first-ever night high school football game at H. Bennett Murray Field on October 11. Sponsored by School Committeeman Joseph F. Curran, the proposed contest against Framingham High School would mark a historic milestone as the very first night game in the history of the Bay State League.

While the proposal enjoys backing from a majority of the committee, members voted to table a final decision until they could confer directly with Athletic Director Orlando Scafati, Coach Arthur Gulla, High School Principal Charles A. Hayden, and visiting athletic officials from Framingham.

Combating Student and Community Apathy

Committeeman Curran brought forward the night game initiative to combat what he described as “an apparent apathy on the part of students and adults towards the sports program at the high school.” By shifting the traditional Saturday afternoon schedule under the lights, Curran expressed hope that the event would serve as a much-needed “shot in the arm” to energize school spirit and revitalize community support for athletics as a whole.

The School Committee is expected to reconvene the following week to review consultations and reach a final determination on the historic matchup.
