Once Again She Is New England’s Best

For the fourth straight year, Sarah Meeks of Norwood High School captured the 200-meter title at the New England track and field championships.

Competing on Saturday at Bridgewater State College, Meeks completed the sprint in 24.69 seconds, narrowly defeating her closest challenger, Angie Barros of O’Bryant High School.

Watching the tightly contested finish from his seat in the stands, Norwood coach Hank Shachoy found it difficult to immediately determine the victor. “It was tough there for a couple of seconds; it looked really close,” Shachoy remarked later. “I was keying on the clock and I couldn’t really tell who won, so I had to go down to the track and another coach told me, ‘It was close, but she got it.’ We knew it would be tough because of the times some of the other girls had in their state meets.”

Although Meeks fell short of her personal goal to break the New England record, her feat of winning the championship during all four years of her high school career earned substantial praise from her coach. “It has been great the past four years. I’m really proud of her and everything she has accomplished,” Shachoy stated. Looking ahead, Meeks is scheduled to travel to Illinois next weekend to compete in the Keebler Invitational before participating in the Junior Olympic meet.
