Marking what patrons and staff have called the “end of an era,” the legendary Olde Colonial Café closed its doors for good, concluding an incredible 56-year run in Norwood.

‘The Last Hurrah’ and a Storied Legacy

The beloved establishment hosted a final farewell gathering titled “The Last Hurrah” on Saturday. While the restaurant spent decades operating at its famous location on Savin Avenue before eventually relocating to 171 Nahatan Street at the site of the old Norwood firehouse, its warm atmosphere, family-run charm, and consistent quality kept generations of community members coming back.

Owner Paul Angelo, who opened the doors in 1969 when he was just 22 years old, reflected on the emotional milestone. Now nearly 80 years old, Angelo told Boston 25 News that while the decision was difficult, the time had come: “This was my life. I love what I did. I’m going to miss it, but when you’re almost 80, it’s time… I can’t wait to spend a lot of time with my kids and their kids.”

Deep Community Ties and Lasting Memories

For the patrons and staff who treated the café as a second home, the closure brought an outpouring of sadness and nostalgia:

  • Customer Impact: Longtime regular Cathy Brooks shared, “It’s devastating. It really is. When you have a place like this that’s been here for so long, and now it’s not going to be the same anymore.” Another loyal customer, Carl Jonasson, made sure to enjoy his traditional Thursday favorite one last time, noting, “I’m famously getting my chicken parm… It’s the biggest and best chicken parm around that I’ve ever had. Even the best of things come to an end, unfortunately, sometimes.”
  • Staff Dedication: Employees who spent decades at the restaurant emphasized the deep bonds formed over the years. Susan Hanley, who worked at the café for 45 years, remarked, “The customers, a lot of them have become friends. It’s really sad because some of these people we may never see again. I’m feeling sadness because it’s the end of an era.”

Backed by the dedication of Angelo’s wife, family, and long-serving staff, the Olde Colonial Café leaves behind an unmatched legacy as a cornerstone of Norwood’s social and culinary history.
