On this day in July 1963, a harrowing incident unfolded at Father McAleer Pool, situated at the end of Vernon Street in Norwood. A 15-year-old youth, William Treeful, was swimming when he collided with another individual beneath the water’s surface. The impact left him unconscious, prompting Lifeguard Allan Carver, a recent graduate of Norwood High School, to spring into action.
Carver swiftly pulled Treeful from the pool and administered first aid, along with Firefighter Charles McDonough and Patrolman Costello, who provided oxygen to the youth. Despite initial concerns, Treeful’s condition was deemed good at Norwood Hospital, where he was treated for a head injury sustained during the accident. The hospital staff opted to keep him under observation due to his head injury.
