Norwood Theatre Changes Hands: New Owner Aims for Revitalization-January 7, 2010

Dover resident Susan Lewis has recently taken ownership of Norwood Theatre, planning extensive renovations and a vibrant reopening. , Lewis, who also resides in Isle of Palms, S.C., acquired the historic building for close to $1 million from the Fiddlehead Theatre Company, which had operated in Norwood for the past 13 years. The purchase was facilitated by Jonathan Radford of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

Expressing her passion for community theater and the arts, Lewis voiced her commitment to breathe new life into the beloved theater. Fiddlehead Theatre Company, having transitioned from an amateur to a professional company three years ago, decided to sell the building earlier this summer with aspirations to relocate to a more urban setting.

After months of contemplation, Lewis embraced the opportunity, stating, “I feel fortunate to have the honor of breathing new life into this wonderful place.” A mother of three and former nurse, Lewis has been actively involved in theater in Westwood and South Carolina, volunteering in community and school plays.

The envisioned renovations for the Norwood Theatre, dating back to 1927, include a new roof, facade repairs, and upgrades to internal systems such as electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning. Plans also include enhancing handicapped accessibility, updating the interior, and adding bathrooms. The anticipated four-month planning phase precedes the commencement of the renovation work.

Despite challenges faced by businesses, Lewis envisions a sustainable business model for the theater. She plans to generate income from for-profit events to support non-profit initiatives, emphasizing the importance of hosting diverse events to attract visitors to Norwood. Lewis aims to keep the theater operational every day of the year, offering a platform for theater companies, music festivals, dance performances, and film festivals.

With collaboration from town officials and community groups, Lewis envisions the Norwood Theatre as a vital contributor to Norwood’s cultural landscape and that of surrounding communities. The goal is to create a dynamic venue that encourages patrons to enjoy the arts and frequent local establishments.
