For a winning coach, Norwood’s Art Gulla sounded remarkably candid and dissatisfied following Saturday’s contest at Murray Field. Despite pinning a 12-0 shutout on brand-new and grass-green Framingham North, Gulla’s post-game summation focused squarely on his concerns moving forward.

“We played lousy ball,” Gulla remarked bluntly. “Our blocking was terrible and we were lucky to win. We’ll play like that against somebody else and we’ll lose.”

Statistics illustrated a game of two entirely distinct halves, suggesting that Norwood spent the first two quarters winning the game and the second half trying to give it away.

First-Half Fireworks and Offensive Spark

The game’s offensive highlights were generated by Norwood standouts Bob DeRose and Mike Carney, the latter a converted end playing his very first game at quarterback after only one week of preparation.

  • Bob DeRose: Racked up 53 of Norwood’s 125 rushing yards and scored a touchdown, while also having impressive 15- and 23-yard runs nullified by penalties.
  • Mike Carney: Contributed 39 yards and a touchdown while orchestrating the offense smoothly.
  • Framingham Standout: For the visitors, Jerome Barton stepped in for injured back Don Cotton, showcasing slick speed to tally 85 of Framingham North’s 101 total yards.

Taking over via a punt at their own 43-yard line early in the first period, the Mustangs mounted a 13-play scoring march driven by the ground game of Carney and DeRose, culminating in DeRose blasting across the goal line from the 3-yard line. A two-point pass attempt was intercepted in the end zone.

Early in the second quarter, Norwood capitalized on special teams pressure when John Solomon broke through to block and recover Bob Watson’s high punt snap. Although an initial four-play series from the 5-yard line stalled, a short punt gave Norwood prime field position at the 35. Eight plays later, Carney capped the drive with a key 15-yard gallop and subsequently bucked over on a keeper, stretching the lead to 12-0.

Second-Half Defensive Heroics

While the offense stagnated after intermission—adding a slim 30 yards and zero first downs—the Norwood defense rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.

Framingham North roared back in the third and fourth quarters, amassing 90 yards and four first downs. However, Norwood’s line and linebackers slammed the door repeatedly, executing three heroic goal-line stands in the second half, alongside a crucial pass interception by DeRose at the Norwood 24 and a fumble recovery at the 16.
