On the sweltering evening of July 16, 1986, Balch Field served as the stage for a tense American Legion Zone 6A baseball contest between the reigning state champions from Norwood and their challengers from Westwood. Entering the game with a dominant 15-1 record, the Norwood team faced fatigue after playing seven games in the preceding four days, a challenge noted by Norwood coach Pete Wall. “We’ve been struggling,” Pete Wall remarked following the game. “We had seven games in four days last week, and it’s tough to get up every day when you’re 16-1.” Despite their exhaustion, the Norwood squad remained a formidable presence on the diamond, determined to maintain their momentum as the American Legion Zone 6A playoffs approached.

Westwood, seeking to reverse their fortunes after two earlier losses to Norwood that season, entered the matchup with a clear objective to prove their competitiveness against the league leaders. The game saw Westwood take an early 4-2 lead in the third inning, driven by a key single from Tom McCusker. After stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Tom McCusker scored on a grounder by Ted Shea, extending the visitor’s advantage. Westwood continued to push, eventually securing a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning after an error by Norwood first baseman Jim Delbou allowed Tom McCusker to cross the plate. Westwood coach Tom McElroy reflected on his team’s aggressive play, stating, “Of course Norwood is an excellent club. They’ve beaten us easily the first two times but I thought we could have beat them tonight.”

The narrative of the evening turned in the fifth inning when Jim Delbou, returning to the lineup after missing six games due to a shoulder injury, made a decisive impact. With the bases loaded, Jim Delbou delivered a clutch double that drove in teammates Mike Generazo and Ted Ghostlaw, who had reached base via walks. This pivotal hit swung the momentum back to the home team, ultimately securing a 6-5 victory for Norwood. Jim Delbou emerged from the contest as both the hero and the villain, his defensive error being eclipsed by his offensive heroics. While Westwood failed to secure the win, Tom McElroy emphasized the psychological value of the performance for his players as they looked toward the playoffs. “That helps,” Tom McElroy said. “You need to have confidence against these guys.” As the sun set over Balch Field, the competitive intensity displayed by both sides underscored the high stakes of the American Legion Zone 6A postseason, leaving fans and players alike to anticipate the path ahead for the reigning state champions.
