Gridiron Grit: Mustangs Ground Out Victory
The Norwood High School football team demonstrated the true meaning of cohesive teamwork and backfield brilliance on a crisp Saturday afternoon, defeating a dangerous Framingham South squad by a score of 19-6. Entering the contest as the defending co-champions of the Bay State League, Norwood faced mounting pressure compounded by early-season injuries. Yet, stellar performances by halfbacks Tom Shea and Kevin Donovan proved decisive, powering the Mustangs through a hard-fought gridiron battle.
Ground Attack and Defensive Resilience
With only minutes elapsed in the opening quarter, Kevin Donovan ignited the Norwood offense, breaking loose on a 22-yard touchdown run around left end. Donovan then calmly converted the extra point with his toe, putting the Mustangs ahead 7-0.
As the second quarter unfolded, Norwood capitalized on disciplined line play and precise play-calling. Coach Art Gulla praised the efforts of his backfield, noting how the running of Shea and the all-around execution of Donovan established momentum. Shortly before halftime, Shea punctuated a sustained drive with a brilliant 18-yard scamper off a pitch-out, extending the Mustangs lead to 13-0.
Though Framingham South attempted to retaliate through the air and relied on the gritty running of Paul Nardini—who helped pace Framingham’s 157 yards on the ground—the determined Norwood defense stiffened when it mattered most. South managed to break through just before halftime when 185-pound halfback Brad Frost sliced through the defense for a 27-yard touchdown reception, though the conversion failed, leaving the score 13-6 at the break.
Securing the Win in the Second Half
Head Coach Bob Jachowicz and the Framingham South team tried desperately to mount a comeback in the second half, but Norwood’s evolving passing game kept the chains moving. Three completed passes contributed 102 yards to the Mustangs aerial attack, keeping South on its heels.
Tom Shea continued to punish Framingham’s defense on the ground, ultimately totaling multiple scores on the day alongside Donovan. In the game’s final minutes, frantic possessions and two intercepted passes highlighted a flurry of action. Brad Frost electrified the crowd with a dazzling 60-رم yard punt return that appeared destined for the end zone, only to be called back by a costly penalty.
When the final whistle blew, Framingham South’sCoach Bob Jachowicz ruefully admitted, “Shea killed us every time. We worked on that all week, but still couldn’t stop him.” Reflecting on the triumph, Coach Art Gulla noted that his early-season “green line” was steadily gaining valuable experience. “The line blocked better and the whole team gave its best,” Gulla stated, celebrating a victory built entirely on collective determination.
