Mustangs Explode for 41 Unanswered Points After Slow Start
After suffering through what felt like two separate games on Friday night in Braintree, the Norwood High School football team decisively shook off an early deficit to secure a dominant 48-19 victory over the Wamps in Bay State League action.
For the first 14 minutes and 52 seconds of game time, Braintree held the upper hand, capitalizing on a stellar ground performance by senior running back Frank Campbell. Campbell rushed for more than 150 yards and three touchdowns by intermission alone—finishing the night with 34 carries for 214 yards—while quarterback Nick Barese connected on three of his first four passes for 50 yards, and defensive back Mike Arki intercepted a pass to set up field position. Bolstered by Campbell’s relentless four-yard touchdown bursts, Braintree stormed out to a 19-7 lead with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter.
However, the visiting Mustangs completely flipped the script in the first half, stampeding for 41 unanswered points to turn the contest into a rout.
Ground Game Dominance Led by Mike Young and Greggory Wahhab
Once Norwood’s offense found its rhythm, the Braintree defense had no answer for the Mustangs’ sensational one-two punch in the backfield. Sophomore running back Mike Young put on a clinic, churning out 223 yards and 3 touchdowns on 23 carries, while junior running back Greggory Wahhab added 150 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 7 carries.
Norwood’s offensive avalanche began immediately after Braintree took its 19-7 lead. On Norwood’s third play from scrimmage following the kickoff, Mike Young burst up the middle and raced 74 yards to the end zone, followed by Ryan O’Rourke‘s extra point to narrow the gap to 12-7. From there, Norwood’s rushing attack took complete control, leaving the Wamps behind as the Mustangs cruised to a 48-19 triumph.
