While the threatening lightning storm stayed away from the skies above, the Norwood High School football team provided plenty of lightning bolts on the gridiron last Saturday, erasing a 14-0 deficit to defeat Needham 20-14 in a thrilling Bay State League matchup and capturing their fourth consecutive victory to improve to 4-1. Needham fell to 2-3 on the season.
Staging a Stunning First-Half Comeback
Needham appeared headed for a comfortable afternoon early in the game after capitalizing on Norwood miscues. Following a fumbled punt, quarterback Greg Broderick connected with Steve Davis on an 8-yard touchdown pass. Soon after, a fumbled snap gave Needham prime field position, allowing Derek Petipas to punch in a 9-yard score, putting the Rockets ahead 14-0 by the second quarter.
Facing a deep deficit, Norwood’s talented sophomore quarterback A.J. Grant orchestrated a brilliant two-minute drill just as the first half was expiring:
- Fake Punt Spark: Facing a stalled drive in Needham territory, Grant dialed up a fake punt-pass play, hitting Brian Needham to move the chains to the 35-yard line.
- Fourth-Down Strike: On another crucial fourth-down conversion, Grant found Mike Riley across the middle at the 10-yard line, and Riley scampered into the end zone to put the Mustangs on the board.
- Last-Second Equalizer: Hoping to pad their lead before halftime, Needham elected to pass instead of running out the clock. Broderick’s pass was intercepted by Mike Menyo and returned to the 16-yard line. With only 31 seconds remaining, Grant targeted Brian Gugliotta in the left corner of the end zone; the ball deflected off the intended receiver and directly into the hands of Andy Ciarletta for a dramatic tying touchdown as time expired in the half, knotting the score at 14-14.
Tragically, the heroic first-half rally came at a heavy cost, as quarterback A.J. Grant suffered a broken collarbone during the contest, threatening to sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Ground Game Seals the Victory
Both defensive units dug in during a scoreless third quarter, turning the game into a gritty trench battle.
The deadlock was finally broken early in the fourth quarter when workhorse running back Brian Gugliotta burst through the line for a spectacular 48-yard touchdown run, sealing the 20-14 victory. Gugliotta finished a phenomenal afternoon rushing for 209 yards on 33 carries.
“The players kept their poise when they could have given up,” praised Norwood head coach Joe Smith. “I told them after Needham’s second score that they should play like it’s 0-0, and they came through.”
