A Single Fumble Sparks Norwood’s Massive Second-Quarter Surge
Proving the old football adage that a single play can completely turn the tide of a game, the Norwood High School football team overcame a sluggish start to rout Bay State League rival Milton High School 31-12 on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 6-0 late in the first period and struggling against Milton’s defense, the Mustangs caught their lucky break when a Milton punt downed inside the 10-yard line was fumbled and recovered by Norwood’s Norm Bratalie at the Milton 35.
Seizing the momentum, quarterback Mike Brown orchestrated an offensive explosion that generated 31 unanswered points entirely within the second quarter.

Coach John Doherty Cautions Against Sloppy Play
Despite the lopsided final score and an impressive aerial display led by quarterback Mike Brown—who connected twice with Dave Steele on long touchdown bombs of 47 and 65 yards—Norwood head coach John Doherty remained critical of his team’s execution in the second half.
“We played a sloppy second half,” Doherty said, shaking his head. “Like a lot of teams we make stupid mistakes, not a lot, but we still make them.”
Milton managed to prevent Norwood from adding to its lead in the final two quarters, ultimately breaking through on the game’s final play when backup quarterback Bob Clark tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jim Finn against the Mustang reserves. Nevertheless, Norwood’s second-quarter offensive blitz secured a comfortable victory as Brian Handley reported for The Patriot Ledger.
