Mustangs Rebound from Walpole Heartbreaker Behind Strong Ground Game
Bouncing back from a crushing last-minute loss to Bay State League leader Walpole the previous week, coach John Doherty’s Norwood High School Mustangs put on a gritty performance at Murray Field on Saturday, holding off a tough Needham High School squad for a 14-7 victory.
Addressing his squad in the locker room after the win, Coach Doherty praised their composure: “You played the game without emotion, which is tough to do. You won today’s ballgame on talent. The Mustangs are back!”
The victory improved Norwood to 5-1 on the season, proving that the previous week’s emotional letdown was merely an aberration. Needham coach Tom Hermanowski praised his team’s effort against the formidable Mustangs: “We have nothing to be ashamed of. We played hard-nosed football, and against Norwood, that’s a big accomplishment.”

Defensive Stand and Senior Leadership Seal the Win
Statistically, the Mustangs dominated the matchup, outgaining the Rockets 210 to 84 on the ground and 65 to 14 through the air. After a scoreless first quarter, Norwood broke through in the second when quarterback Mike Conti capped a 78-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Doherty. In the third quarter, Joe Pusateri extended the lead to 14-0 with an 8-yard scoring run.
Needham (4-3, 3-3 in the league) mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter following a 22-yard pass interference penalty against Norwood safety Mike Conti. Rocket running back Brian Heffernan punched in a 7-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14-7.
When Needham got the ball back on its own 19-yard line with 57 seconds remaining—threatening a repeat of the previous week’s late-game collapse—Coach Doherty remained calm: “We were pretty confident of our defense.” Sure enough, cornerback Dan McGuire intercepted a pass from Karl Kreshpane with 26 seconds left to seal the victory (supplementing an earlier interception by Conti to close out the first half).
Standout Performances and Postseason Hopes
- John Cavanaugh: Senior tackle and tri-captain named the game’s Most Valuable Player for anchor work on both lines.
- Kevin Doherty: Led the ground game with 93 yards on 24 carries and added 43 receiving yards on three receptions.
- Joe Pusateri: Rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries, caught two passes for 22 yards, and was awarded the game ball.
- Tri-Captains: Conti, fullback John Sullivan, and Cavanaugh were lauded by Coach Doherty for providing the steady leadership that sparked the bounce-back win.
With the regular season winding down, Norwood finds itself scoreboard-watching, needing an upset of league leader Walpole by Dedham, Braintree, or Framingham North to sneak back into contention for the league title and a Super Bowl berth. The Mustangs travel to face Wellesley next Saturday.
