Saturated Turf and Early Braintree Miscues Set the Tone
Heavy autumn downpours turned the gridiron into a soggy, mud-soaked field for Braintree High School‘s Homecoming Day, but the elements could not slow down a dominant visiting squad from Norwood High School.
Despite the inclement weather, Braintree High School’s football team—affectionately known as the Wamps—fought hard under head coach Gus Giardi. Entering the matchup with a difficult 0-7 record, the young Braintree squad struggled once again to convert promising offensive drives into points.
Led by running back Rob Holley (nine carries for 69 yards), the Wamps marched 48 yards on an early possession before fumbling at the Norwood 27-yard line. Later in the game, quarterback Colin Lynch connected on passes of 22 and 7 yards to Brian Eades and Steve Kenny, respectively, advancing deep into Norwood territory before a costly holding penalty on third-and-eight stalled the drive.
Reflecting on his team’s recurring struggles, coach Gus Giardi noted: “We keep saying we’re a young team and that has caused lots of problems for us. We have to take the kids back to the drawing board each time a team shows us something new. One of the problems with that approach is you don’t want to overload their circuits.”

Norwood Capitalizes on Mistakes to Seal 28-0 Shutout
The Norwood Mustangs, under the direction of coach Joe Smith, ruthlessly capitalized on every Braintree miscue. The scoring floodgates opened after Jason Nutting recovered a fumble at the Braintree 44-yard line. Ground-game powerhouse Eric Deshiro immediately ripped off two runs totaling 19 yards, setting up quarterback A.J. Grant to toss his first of three touchdown passes—a 25-yard strike to Brian Chisolm.
Norwood maintained pressure on the ground through Deshiro and Tim Needham. Grant then connected with Needham on a 15-yard touchdown pass, following up with a successful kick to stake the Mustangs to a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
In the second half, Grant struck again on the first play from scrimmage, finding Chisolm wide open in the end zone for a 31-yard score before booting his third point-after. The Mustangs capped their dominant afternoon in the fourth quarter when Aaron Walkins broke loose for a 15-yard touchdown run, bringing the final tally to 28-0.
Despite the lopsided victory, coach Joe Smith maintained a grounded perspective on his team’s performance: “There was a lack of intensity out there on our part. But we have a potent offense and considering the sloppiness of the field, I thought we played pretty well.”
