Prolonged Success in National Competitions Earns Local Freelance Writer and Contest Enthusiast a Spot Among 40 National Finalists with Her Signature “White Cloud Gingerbread” Recipe

NORWOOD — For 46-year-old Norwood housewife, mother, and prolific freelance writer Mary Lou Healy, a lifelong passion for entering contests has transformed into an extraordinary knack for winning grand prizes. Healy, residing at 222 Vernon St., recently added an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii to her already impressive collection of contest rewards—a haul that has previously included exotic trips to Florida and Mexico, assorted bicycles, color television sets, toaster ovens, pots and pans, and even a case of specialty concentrate for making chocolate milk. Competing in the prestigious Second Annual Pineapple Cooking Contest sponsored nationally by the Hawaiian Pineapple Growers’ Association, Healy successfully navigated initial local rounds to secure her coveted spot as one of only 40 national finalists. She achieved this milestone with her original culinary creation, “White Cloud Gingerbread,” a delicately spiced light cake enriched with crushed pineapple and crowned with a fluffy, toasted walnut meringue and a fresh gardenia garnish.
Healy’s remarkable winning streak is matched only by her family’s collective good fortune, making the Healy household a local legend for what neighbors playfully dub the “luck of the Irish.” Her husband, Jim Healy, and the family’s adventurous pet cat, Captain Claw, have each won separate trips to Florida, while every single member of the household—including 19-year-old daughter Mary Beth—has won a brand-new television set through various creative promotions. Captain Claw even achieved widespread national recognition earlier this year by capturing a spot as one of only nine finalists across the United States and Canada in the Eighth Annual All-American Glamour Kitty Contest sponsored by a major cat litter company, an event where Healy spent until 1:30 a.m. sewing a custom tricornered hat and vest so her feline companion could properly strut down the runway.
Alongside her enthusiastic hobby of entering contests, Healy maintains a busy professional schedule. She has successfully authored over 300 humorous studio greeting card messages, published short stories in multiple regional and national magazines, and written several small books. Reflecting on her upcoming journey to the Hawaiian islands this month to compete against nine other category finalists for the $10,000 grand prize and a chance at the title of “Mr. Massachusetts,” Healy remains wonderfully grounded. “I’m going primarily for the trip and for the sheer fun of it,” she remarked with a smile. “I certainly don’t expect to win the grand prize.” Yet, given her legendary track record of perseverance and creative recipe development—which previously earned her copper pans in a gelatin cook-off and a toaster oven in a muffin competition—friends and neighbors across Norwood know better than to count her out.
