Norwood Hospital officials announced the temporary shutdown of a 28-bed medical-surgical unit yesterday, taking nearly 10 percent of the facility’s total bed capacity offline in response to a seasonal drop in patient census.
Administrator Bruce Komiske firmly rejected notions that the closure signaled underlying financial instability, describing the move as a routine cost-saving measure frequently deployed across the healthcare industry during slower post-Labor Day periods. “It’s a business practice every hospital has been doing,” Komiske stated, noting that the unit—which cares for patients stepping down from intensive care—could resume normal operations as early as next week.
The affected unit, established two years prior as part of the hospital’s $28 million expansion, experienced similar brief closures last year around Labor Day and during the holiday week between Christmas and New Year’s. Komiske added that more than 100 of the hospital’s 308 beds had remained vacant over the preceding two weeks.
Addressing staff concerns following circulating rumors, hospital administration scheduled formal briefings to reassure employees. “No one is being laid off, and no one is being asked to take reduced hours,” Komiske emphasized, though the temporary closure follows a prior round of budget tightening last month that resulted in 35 job cuts, including 11 nursing positions.
