Dave Joy Flawless on the Mound as Porcello Blasts 400-Foot Home Run to End Offensive Slump

Norwood’s hitters erupted for 11 hits and 10 runs to defeat Franklin, 10-2, in American Legion baseball action last night.
Norwood until yesterday, had had trouble in putting together an offense in its previous games, but in the first inning, Joe Porcello gave evidence that the slump was about to end. Joe Porcello blasted a fastball, pitched by Franklin starter Tom Stoime, about 400 feet to dead center for a home run. In the second inning, Mike McGovern put another Norwood run on the scoreboard with a home run to right field. Steve Fisher doubled and Rick Saad singled to add what proved to be the winning run in that inning.
Norwood added four more runs in the third inning on a triple by Mike McGovern who scored on a wild pitch, followed by singles by Steve Fisher and Rick Saad and three straight walks. Joe Porcello then singled in two runners to complete the inning’s scoring. Three more runs in the fifth inning gave Norwood pitcher Dave Joy a comfortable lead. Dave Joy, who pitched in the shadow of Bill Travers last season for Norwood High School, gave up just five hits for two runs and did not walk a single batter. The right-hander is now 2-0 in Legion competition. Norwood, currently holding a 3-2 record, will play Weymouth on Weymouth‘s home turf this coming Thursday.
