Sixth Consecutive Class AAAA State Championship Won at Cawley Stadium
Continuing an unprecedented and historic marching dynasty, the Norwood High School Mustang Marching Band captured the Class AAAA state championship—representing bands with 100 or more members—for the sixth consecutive year. Held on Sunday at Cawley Stadium in Lowell and sponsored by the Massachusetts Instrumental Conductors Association, the competitive state showcase featured 15 elite marching bands from across the region.
According to band publicity manager Barry Quinlan, this remarkable streak of six successive state titles stands as an unprecedented milestone in Massachusetts high school marching band history. The state championship victory served as the triumphant culmination of a whirlwind weekend for the Norwood musicians.
Billerica Invitational and Pre-Game Performance at Schaefer Stadium
The bustling weekend began on Saturday night at the same Lowell venue, where the Norwood band competed in an invitational tournament sponsored by the town of Billerica that drew 14 participating musical units. While Norwood achieved the highest score among all competing Massachusetts bands, top overall honors went to the visiting Hammonton Blue Devil Band from New Jersey. In the Class C division, nearby Westwood High Wolverines earned a strong second-place finish.
Before claiming their state crown on Sunday afternoon, the Mustang Marching Band performed a high-profile pre-game exhibition at Schaefer Stadium, entertaining thousands of sports fans prior to the New England Patriots versus Miami Dolphins professional football game.
