Mustangs Look to Upset Unbeaten Rebels in Fierce Inter-Town Rivalry
As the Bay State League football season hits a crucial juncture, Norwood High School prepares to host undefeated co-leader Walpole in what sportswriters predict could be a massive upset. Entering the contest with a 2-2-1 record, Mustang coach Art Gulla believes his squad is primed to break out, pointing to Norwood’s rock-solid defense—which completely blanked Needham’s secondary last week in a 16-3 triumph—as one of the best in the league.
However, generating consistent offense has proved challenging for the Mustangs. “Too many times we’ve had to pass in running situations because our running hasn’t been what it should,” Gulla explained. “In order to play better we must complement our passing with our running. But one of these weeks our offense will open up.”
Walpole Faces Mental Strain and Threat of a Letdown
For Walpole coach John Lee, preparing for Norwood has presented a unique strategic challenge due to the unpredictable nature of the Mustang playbook. “One week they pass 51 times out of a shotgun offense and the next week they run from a straight T formation and don’t put the ball in the air at all,” Lee noted.
Furthermore, Lee expressed concern over emotional fatigue and potential letdowns following Walpole’s hard-fought 20-12 victory over Natick—anchored by star offensive weapon Bill Kebler (632 yards on 98 carries) and defensive standout Ed McDavitt—especially with an upcoming showdown against Framingham South. “Getting the kids up is the biggest problem though because they’re coming off a big one and have another tough game next week with South,” Lee said. With only four miles separating the two rival communities, Gulla emphasized that the proximity and rivalry always bring out the best in both teams.
