“Our defense was immense,” declared Norwood High School football coach John Doherty following his squad’s commanding 18-0 shutout victory over the Milton Wildcats in a Bay State League matchup.
“Our linebackers Barry McDonough, Paul Cunningham and Paul Dyer were just exceptional,” Doherty praised, pointing to the hard-hitting trio that anchored a stifling defensive effort.
Defense Capitalizes on Milton Turnovers
The Mustangs’ defense set the tone early by pouncing on Milton mistakes. On the Wildcats’ opening possession, Milton halfback Bob Higgins fumbled on the Norwood 8-yard line. Mustang senior running back Bob Hill recovered the loose ball and returned it to the 1-yard line before plunging across the goal line himself for the game’s opening score. Although the extra point attempt by Tom Cronin went wide, Norwood seized an early 6-0 lead.
“Our defense gave us some crucial turnovers in the beginning and we had a chance to blow open the game,” said Coach Doherty.
Norwood extended its lead in the third quarter following another Milton miscue. Fullback Mark Andon fumbled just inside the Milton 10-yard line, and linebacker Barry McDonough pounced on the fumble. One play later, senior running back Steve Cronin scrambled 10 yards into the end zone, pushing the advantage to 12-0.
The Mustangs sealed the victory early in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback John Doherty Jr. connected with Fernando DeCosta for a 43-yard touchdown reception, bringing the final score to 18-0 and stretching Norwood’s undefeated record to 3-0.
Offensive Standouts and Punting Excellence
Offensively, DeCosta churned out 88 yards on the ground, while Mike Connolly added steady firepower. Tri-captain and senior punter Joe Travers also delivered an outstanding performance, booming five punts for an impressive 43-yard average.
Despite the shutout win, Coach Doherty maintained a critical eye toward his offense’s execution: “We won a game which makes us feel good. But we didn’t play the game we should have. I’m a little disappointed with our offense… I think if it wasn’t for our defense, the results would have been different. We’re going to be a good football team. We just gotta stop making mistakes.”
Milton’s defense fought valiantly, highlighted by Andon’s key interception halting a third-quarter Mustang drive, alongside crucial tackles by senior end Craig DiBona and senior tackle John Carlos.
