It is common for most schoolboy football teams to rely on one or two standout players to shoulder the scoring load. Not so with the 1974 Norwood High School Mustangs.

In a dominant offensive display on Saturday, six different Norwood players scored touchdowns as the Mustangs utterly decimated the Needham Rockets 41-7 in a Bay State League rout. The sheer offensive distribution ensured that future opponents will find it impossible to key in on any single weapon.

“We do have a lot of depth,” Norwood Coach John Doherty remarked proudly after the game. “And it makes it easier for everybody. It’s odd, but if the Mustangs hadn’t lost four of their six fumbles, the score might have been even more lopsided.”

Relentless Offense and Balanced Scoring

The Mustangs rolled up a staggering 472 yards of total offense, exploiting Needham’s defense from the opening whistle.

Norwood struck first following an early fumble recovery. After Joe Kinosian returned the opening kickoff to the Needham 19-yard line and a brief turnover hiccup, the Mustangs seized control. Mike Gulla took a pitchout from quarterback Larry Brown and scampered 8 yards into the end zone. A successful pass from Brown to Kinosian for the two-point conversion made it 8-0.

Every running back who carried the ball and every end who caught a pass made major yardage gains:

  • Brian Collins and Bill Breen pounded out huge chunks of ground yardage on nearly every carry.
  • Steve Savage and Brian Steele exploited the stellar blocking of an offensive line anchored by center Greg Donahue, guards Chris Cavanaugh and Henry Stampfl, and tackles Mark Conroy and Frank Cordapatri.

Midway through the second period, Kinosian scored his second touchdown on an 8-yard run. On the very last play of the first half—following an interception by Brian Paras—Brown bought enough time “for a sandwich and a coffee” before floating a beautifully thrown 31-yard touchdown pass to Steele, who outfought the Rocket defender for the ball. Henry Stampfl’s extra point sent Norwood into halftime comfortably ahead, 21-0.

Second-Half Dominance

Norwood didn’t let up after the break. Steele snagged an interception on the opening play of the third quarter at his own 28-yard line. Facing a tough third-and-10 situation, Brown connected with Kinosian on a 26-yard strike, setting up a 29-yard touchdown bomb to Savage.

The Mustangs’ final two scores came via a 6–yard run by co-captain Bill Breen and a 1-yard plunge by reserve Paul Cisternelli. Needham’s only score of the afternoon came late in the final period on a dramatic 90-yard kickoff return by Rob Prescott.
