Football coaches usually abhor tie games. “They’re no good. They don’t mean anything,” one Bay State League coach commented recently. “They’re about as exciting as gym class.”

On Saturday, however, Norwood and Wellesley played a scoreless tie that meant everything—and as far as Norwood fans were concerned, it was one of the most thrilling contests of the entire season.

The defensive standoff stands as one of the biggest upsets in the Bay State League this fall. Before the season commenced, consensus picks pointed to Wellesley as the team to beat. In their opening two games, the Red Raiders lived up to that billing by crushing Dedham 34-0 and dismantling Braintree 42-8.

Meanwhile, Norwood entered Saturday’s matchup looking like a solid, if unspectacular, contender, having tied Milton 8-8 and shut out Framingham North 16-0.

Defense Tells the Story

Norwood Coach Art Gulla sensed his squad was primed for a breakout test. “Defense will tell the story,” Gulla predicted before kickoff. “My kids have the ability to win, but they just have to realize it themselves.”

While the game ended without a score on the board, the defensive masterclass delivered by Norwood felt every bit as monumental as an outright victory. Because of their grit, resilience, and stellar defensive execution against an offensive juggernaut, the Mustangs have been selected as The Patriot Ledger Team of the Week.
