The traditionally unsung heroes of the Norwood High School defensive unit stole the show at home Saturday, turning in a masterclass performance to hand Framingham South a 28-14 defeat and secure the Mustangs’ first victory in the Bay State League.
The sheer dominance of the Norwood defense was encapsulated in a staggering halftime statistic: while holding a commanding 22-8 lead at the break, the Mustangs had managed to gain only one first down on offense. The defensive and special teams units forced turnovers, blocked punts, and capitalized on mistakes to set up three of Norwood’s four touchdowns.
Special Teams and Defensive Fireworks
Norwood’s opportunistic defense delivered a demoralizing blow to Framingham South right from the opening whistle:
- Blocked Punts:Barry Dyke and Fred O’Connell teamed up to block punts by South’s Bob Allen on successive series.
- First Score:Tom Taylor scooped up the loose ball following the first blocked punt and scampered into the end zone, followed by a two-point conversion run by Brad Kelley for an 8-0 lead.
- Second Score: After Dyke and O’Connell blocked a second punt—with Dyke stopped just short of the goal line at the 10-yard line—Bill Freytag punched it in from seven yards out. Bob Dickinson connected with Kelley for the conversion, pushing the lead to 16-0 in the first quarter.
- Third Score: When South’s Charlie Flynn bobbled a towering 38-yard punt by Dyke, speedy Dave Thomas pounced on the fumble at the 11-yard line. Two plays later, Tom Gugliotta swept nine yards around the end for a touchdown, building a 22-0 advantage.
Framingham South quarterback Paul Smith eventually ignited his offense late in the second quarter, hitting receiver Brad Newman for a two-point conversion and tossing a 36-yard touchdown “bomb” to Anthony King just before halftime to make it 22-8.
Ground Attack and Defensive Anchors
In the second half, the Norwood offense found its rhythm, putting together the team’s best sustained drive of the day—knocking off four first downs and culminating in a one-yard touchdown plunge by Gugliotta through the middle.
- Offensive Standouts: Tom Gugliotta (64 rushing yards) and Brad Kelley (54 rushing yards) paced a ground attack that functioned far more fluidly in the second half.
- Defensive Standouts: Coach Art Gulla praised the entire defensive unit for executing a flawless game plan that handcuffed South’s passing game. Standouts in the trenches included Barry Dyke, Fred O’Connell, Paul Donovan, Dick Laffey, and Joe Puzin, whose heavy pass rush and blitz pressure forced numerous negative plays. In the secondary, Dave Thomas and Tom Gugliotta played exceptional opportunistic football, with Thomas intercepting a pass in the third quarter.
Framingham South added a late fourth-quarter touchdown against Norwood’s reserves when Smith scrambled 16 yards on a roll-out, finalizing the score at 28-14.
“This is the kind of game we told you you could play—a great defensive game and our offense started to move,” Coach Gulla told his players in the locker room.
