Mustangs Out-Hit and Out-Block Wildcats Behind Keaney, Campilio, and King
Entering the contest with a quiet 5-1 record in the formidable Bay State League—fresh off an eye-opening victory over Brookline—the Milton High School football team ran into a relentless Norwood High School squad that pulled off a dramatic 14-6 upset on Milton’s home field.
Led by a formidable, newly coalesced defense, Norwood (4-3) out-hit and out-blocked the Wildcats, withstanding intense second-half turnovers and sealing the victory when defensive standout Dan King intercepted a pass at the Norwood 15-yard line with under a minute remaining.
Reflecting on the tough loss, Milton head coach John Riordan praised Norwood’s intensity: “Norwood just out-hit, out-ran, and out-blocked us today. We had chances to score early, but we didn’t execute plays that were there for us. When you don’t execute against a team like them, you don’t win.”
Second-Quarter Surge Flips Game Momentum
Milton struck first on its second play of the game when Novar Whitworth—who rushed for 108 yards on 17 carries—exploded for a 62-yard touchdown run, giving the Wildcats an early 6-0 lead. Milton seemed poised to break the game open when Joe Grauthier blocked a Norwood punt and Mike Brennan recovered it at the Mustang 13-yard line. However, Norwood’s goal-line defense held firm, denying Milton any points and turning the tide of the game.
Norwood’s offense capitalized in the second quarter with a dominant 81-yard, eight-play drive spearheaded by running back Steve Keaney (14 carries for 151 yards):
- Rushing Surge: Keaney broke off-tackle for a 37-yard gain down to the Wildcat 3-yard line.
- Game-Tying Touchdown: Keaney punched it over on the very next play to tie the contest at 6-6.
- Alert Special Teams: On the ensuing kickoff, a squib kick bounced inside the sideline past the Milton returner, where Norwood’s Dan King alertly pounced on the ball at the Milton 26.
- Go-Ahead Score: On the next play, quarterback Chris Campilio launched a 26-yard touchdown strike to Jason McIntyre, then rolled out for a successful two-point conversion to put Norwood ahead 14-6 before halftime.
Despite three second-half drives into Milton territory that yielded no points due to two lost fumbles and a holding penalty that called back a touchdown pass, Norwood’s defense held the line. When Milton quarterback Solomon Demeke completed three late passes to Charles Beyer to reach the Norwood 35 with under a minute left, King’s clutch interception put an end to the threat and secured the Mustang victory.
