Paul Dyer Leads Suffocating Defense in “War” Before 6,500 Fans
Described simply as “war” by participants and observers alike, a fierce gridiron showdown at Turco Field yesterday lived up to every expectation as the Norwood Mustangs shut out the Walpole Rebels6–0. Played before a packed crowd estimated at 6,500 spectators, the victory gives Norwood sole possession of first place in the Bay State League (BSL) while keeping their Division I Super Bowl berth hopes alive—not to mention securing ultimate bragging rights in a storied rivalry.
Reflecting on the grueling contest, victorious coach John Doherty praised the intensity of the play: “Not only was it a great team performance by us, it was a great game. There were some super high school players out there.” Doherty singled out senior linebacker Paul Dyer, who earned the game MVP trophy after a masterclass on defense: “In my 20 years of coaching, I think I saw one of the finest defensive performances ever turned in by a young man out there today. Paul Dyer was all over the field… He made eight unassisted tackles, knocked down probably three key passes and played inspired football. The kid was just fantastic.”
Dyer deflected praise to his teammates, noting, “The whole defense was fired up and we weren’t going to let down.” The Mustang defense completely neutralized a high-powered Walpole offense—which entered the game averaging 29 points per contest—by shutting them out entirely in the first half and surrendering zero first downs before intermission. Standouts in the middle of the field included Brian Cox, Joe Munro, Don Whitney, Barry McDonough, and Paul Cunningham.
Second-Quarter Touchdown Pass Decides the Issue
Offense was at a premium as Walpole’s defense dug in during the second half, holding Norwood to just a single first down and forcing losses on 12 offensive scrimmage plays behind the efforts of Kevin Nee, Mike MacKay, and Joe Abely. Walpole coach John Lee noted, “Our defense played well. But they were a lot quicker than we were. We didn’t execute offensively and we never got a break. Norwood always had good field position and they never let us out of our own territory.”
The game’s sole score came in the second quarter, capped by a brilliant play call on fourth-and-goal:
- The Drive: A 74-yard march featuring a 24-yard pass from quarterback John Doherty to Fernando DeCosta and a 14-yard burst by junior halfback Joe Pusateri.
- The Score: Facing a key fourth down from the two-yard line, Coach Doherty dialed up a play-action pass. Pusateri went in motion to the left, following decoy receiver Joe Travers into wide-open space in the end zone. “We didn’t think they’d expect the pass from there,” Pusateri said. Doherty explained, “I felt it had to work… that they’d be looking to stop the run. Travers’ role on the play was to come out, looking like the key man. We knew they’d have to cover him and Pusateri would be open for the score.”
Late-Game Drama and Defensive Stands
Walpole threatened in the closing minute after quarterback Ken Moriarty completed a clutch third-and-17 pass to Paul DiPillo followed by a first-down run by Dave Luongo. With the ball at the Norwood 30-yard line and only 21 seconds remaining, Cunningham intercepted an underthrown Rebel pass to seal the 6–0 triumph. Norwood also benefited from two late breaks: a disputed punt touch ruling with 7:20 remaining and a fumble recovery by Gordon Grasselli with 2:49 left that allowed the Mustangs to run out the clock.
