The Norwood American Legion team continued its impressive mid-season surge, defeating Franklin with a decisive 5-0 shutout performance at the hands of pitcher Dave Joy.

This victory marked the third consecutive win for the Norwood squad, with the talented junior pitcher Dave Joy earning the victory in each of those individual contests. After a notably slow start to the season, Norwood successfully improved its overall record to 6-5, effectively positioning the team to narrow the gap against Walpole, the formidable leader of the Zone 6B standings. The game was defined by a steady, consistent offensive effort and stellar defensive support for Dave Joy, who showcased excellent control and an effective, movement-heavy curveball throughout the entire duration of the shutout. Norwood initiated the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Bill Moan singled, followed by a walk for Brian Clougher. George Ranalli drove in Bill Moan and advanced Brian Clougher to third base with a timely single. Rick Saad then executed a flawless squeeze bunt to drive home Brian Clougher, setting the tone for the remainder of the afternoon. In the fifth inning, Mike McGovern sparked another rally by reaching base on an error, stealing second base, and advancing to third on a passed ball. Joe Porcello followed with a walk, and the pair successfully executed a delayed steal, allowing Mike McGovern to score from third base. Additional runs were added in the same frame when Brian Clougher singled and reached second on an overthrow, eventually scoring alongside George Ranalli on a clutch pinch-hit single delivered by Tony Siderwicz. Throughout the duration of the contest, Dave Joy received exceptional defensive backing from his entire infield, most notably from shortstop John McTernan, helping him secure his fifth win against only one loss this season. The victory was a testament to the growth and development of the Norwood players who have worked to stabilize their performance as the league season progresses toward its conclusion.
In a concurrent Zone 6A matchup, Needham surged to a 7-2 victory over Canton, largely due to a dominant offensive outburst in the opening inning that completely overwhelmed the opposition. Needham capitalized on walks to Jim Joyce and Burt Bornstein, followed by crisp singles from Mike Melling and Bob Dawson that plated early runs. A walk to Ron Machunski loaded the bases, setting the stage for Robbie Ftorek, who smashed a resounding double to drive in three runs. Robbie Ftorek himself eventually scored the sixth run of the inning following a defensive error by the team from Canton. Needham added one final run in the fourth inning when Jim Joyce walked and eventually scored. Canton’s offensive production was notably stagnant, as they managed to score two runs in the contest without recording a single hit until the sixth inning, thanks to masterful pitching from the Needham staff. Starting pitcher Rick Smedberg was relieved by Mike Melling in the second inning, who went on to strike out eight batters and earn the win, pushing Needham’s record to a formidable 7-1. As the league playoffs loomed, both Norwood and Needham demonstrated the momentum, tactical depth, and resilience necessary to be considered serious contenders in their respective zones, leaving fans and league analysts alike to speculate on the potential for a deeper postseason run. The intensity of these matchups reflected the competitive spirit of Zone 6A American Legion baseball and Zone 6B American Legion baseball, promising an exciting conclusion to the season as these young athletes continue to refine their skills on the diamond while playing at venues like Adams Field. Each team displayed the grit and determination required to compete at this level, and the outcomes on this day have significantly altered the landscape of the regional standings. The performance of these athletes on the field underscores the importance of the American Legion Baseball program in developing local talent and fostering a spirit of healthy competition within the community, providing players with the opportunity to gain valuable experience that will serve them well in their future athletic endeavors and beyond.
