New Sidewalks Possible Under W. P. A. Project-This Day In Norwood History-April 22, 1938

“Provided that we are able to carry out our present plans, we expect to complete all granolithic sidewalks which are being constructed in cooperation with the Works Progress Administration and for which applications were received in 1936, within the next eight to ten weeks.

’’Since this project has been in operation for the past two years, we have received applications for additional sidewalks to be constructed under this program. It is apparent that there is some demand in the Town by property owners for the construction of sidewalks under this program.

Recognizing this demand, the Board of Selectmen have agreed that we should accept new applications and submit another project for approval to the Works Progress Administration to construct additional granolithic sidewalks. Accordingly, we are making a public announcement of this action of the Board of Selectmen and request that all property owners who are interested in participating in the application at the office of the advantages of such a project, make General Manager not later than Saturday, April 30, 1938. The application should state the location of the property, the frontage in feet of the property on the street and whether or not a driveway apron or entrance is desired.

“The basis of operating this project will be the same as the former project, that is, the property owners will pay in advance upon due notice from the General Manager’s office when construction is to be undertaken at a cost of $.07 per square foot or where the sidewalk is of standard width of 5 feet a cost of $.35 per running front foot plus a cost of $2.50 for the driveway apron or entrance where desired. The town will pay the difference between the cost provided by the property owners and the total material and equipment rental cost and the Works Progress Administration will provide the labor cost.

“We wish to emphasize that the deposit is not necessary with the application. The application must be filed on or before April 30 and payment of the deposit must be made upon due notice from the Manager’s office which will be prior to the actual start of construction of the sidewalk. Any questions in connection with this work will be answered by contact with the office of the General Manager.”

Norwood Board Selects Eight Sidewalk Areas

Will Apply For Another W. P. A. Project

The Norwood Board of Selectmen, faced with stretching a $6,000 sidewalk appropriation to cover a list of requested and proposed walks whose total cost added up to $10,718.33, picked eight areas where bituminous concrete walks will be constructed.

On a motion from John Mutch these areas were selected with the engineering cost provided for

Dean Street, north side from Washington Street to Railroad Bridge.

George Street, north side from Washington Street westerly.

Cottage Street, south side from Nichols to Prospect.

Nahatan Street, south side from the end of the present walk to the last house.

Winslow Avenue, west side from Harding Road to Hoyle Street.

Heaton Avenue, north side from Washington street to Pond Avenue

Cypress Street, north side from Winter Street to Lincoln Street

Berwick Road, from Chape! street to Gardner Road.

A further motion instructed the manager to solicit a new application for a granolithic sidewalk W. P. A. project, with the hope that more walks could be put in with the abutters paying part of the costs.
