On July 17, 1978, the small, historic church building on Chapel Street in Norwood began a new chapter under the dedicated leadership of the Rev. T. A. Pearson. A native of Texas and a 1975 graduate of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, T. A. Pearson founded the Calvary Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle with the resolute goal of providing a fundamental, Bible-based faith to the local community.

Having spent the previous year conducting extensive missions and Bible studies from his home in East Dedham, T. A. Pearson sought a more traditional, spiritually resonant “stained glass windows and steeple” environment to properly house his growing congregation. The Chapel Street building, which dates back to a 1909 cornerstone originally laid by a group of Swedish Evangelicals, had most recently been occupied by the Nazarene Church before that congregation’s relocation to Walpole.

T. A. Pearson personally oversaw the exhaustive restorations required to return the structure to a state of grace, including a rebuilt chimney, the installation of new light fixtures, fresh interior painting, and a complete rewiring of the facility. Financial support for this ambitious project was bolstered by a critical down payment from a fellow Texas contractor, supplemented by steady donations from various independent Baptist churches that provide the financial bedrock for his ministry. The name of the new tabernacle carries deep personal and religious significance; “Calvary” serves as a direct reference to the pastor’s home church in the Houston, Texas suburb of Arcola, while “Metropolitan” was a specific descriptor he had registered with the Commonwealth before his move to New England.

Describing the core mission of the church, T. A. Pearson emphasized that it is entirely independent of mainstream denominational ties and strictly adheres to Fundamental Baptist doctrine. He envisions the tabernacle as a sanctuary where Christ acts as the high priest and where congregants can reliably hear the Bible preached in its entirety. The congregation practices New Testament Christianity, which necessitates a strict requirement for total immersion baptism. Before the church could finalize the installation of its own baptistry, the pastor occasionally utilized facilities at the Braintree Baptists Temple or improvised in local waters; he once chuckled while recounting a particularly memorable case: “I don’t know if it was legal, but we used New Pond, across from St. Timothy’s. I saw everybody swimming there and so I figured, if they could swim, I could baptize.”

The church has announced a full, rigorous schedule of services, including Sunday school at 9:45 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., and evening services at 7 p.m., along with mid-week meetings every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. As he continues to settle into the Norwood community with his wife Kathryn and his two young sons, Jonathan (age 5) and David (age 2), T. A. Pearson remains steadfastly committed to his vision of providing an old-fashioned spiritual home for those searching for a reawakening. He reflects often on his own spiritual rebirth, describing it not as a melodramatic event involving singing birds or tears, but as a quiet, definitive shift that granted him peace, and he hopes to share that same stability with the residents of the town. For those unable to attend in person, the pastor also offers free home Bible study courses through the Tabernacle Home Bible Institute located at 71 Chapel St.
