A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Home for Aged Women, located at 201 South Huntington Ave., for Miss Betty Eicke, 95, a trailblazing former superintendent and director of nurses at Norwood Hospital who passed away Saturday at the home.
Life and Distinguished Nursing Career
The Rev. Allen Keedy of the First Congregational Church in Norwood will officiate at the memorial service. Born in Bremen, Germany, Miss Eicke resided at the Boston home for the final nine years of her life.
Her remarkable career in professional nursing and hospital administration spanned decades:
- Early Training and Education: She entered the Salem Hospital School of Nursing in 1897, subsequently attending Olivet College in Michigan in 1900 before returning to Salem in 1902 to engage in private duty nursing.
- Administrative Development: In 1912, she became assistant to the superintendent of Lawrence Hospital, later augmenting her administrative credentials by attending summer nursing sessions at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City in 1914 and returning for specialized studies in nursing school administration in 1924.
- Norwood Hospital Tenure: Miss Eicke assumed the role of superintendent of Norwood Hospital in 1926. From 1931 until her retirement in 1942, she served as superintendent of nurses, guiding the institution through an era of significant medical advancement.
In addition to her distinguished professional legacy, Miss Eicke authored two books—one detailing her life experiences in the United States and another chronicling her family history. She is survived by her nephew, Gustav Eicker.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends have requested that memorial contributions be directed to the Norwood Hospital Women’s Auxiliary.
