Operated Callahan’s Furniture for 50 Years

Born and raised in Norwood, Mr. Callahan was deeply rooted in the fabric of the town, leaving behind a legacy of civic leadership, athletic achievement, and merchant dedication.

Mr. Callahan graduated from Norwood High School in 1927, where he starred as a shortstop on the school’s legendary 1927 state champion baseball team. He went on to earn a degree from Georgetown University in 1931 and graduated from Georgetown Law School in 1934, continuing his passion for baseball by playing both at Georgetown and in local leagues around the Norwood area. Though trained in law, the onset of the Great Depression drew him back to Norwood, where he joined the family enterprise—originally founded by his uncle and run alongside his father—at Norwood Furniture Co., universally known throughout the community as Callahan’s Furniture. His son, William R. Callahan, noted, “My father remained active in the business and went to work every day until he sold it in 1985.” The business eventually relocated to a site near Route 1 in Walpole in the late 1960s.

Committed to public service, Mr. Callahan served as a town selectman from 1953 to 1956, taking the helm as board chairman in 1956. He also lent his expertise to the Finance Committee and the Library Board, serving on the library’s building committee during its major expansion. Selectman Joseph F. Curran praised his steady leadership, remarking, “He was a businessman, and he led by example, both in his business and his personal life… He was always there when he was needed. He helped an awful lot of people.” Longtime town assessor James J. Drummey recalled him as a low-key, universally liked gentleman.

Outside of his professional and civic endeavors, Mr. Callahan was an avid golfer and a 30-year member of the Walpole Country Club, enjoyed travels to Bermuda, and maintained active membership in the Norwood Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by three sons, William R. Callahan of Norwood, Daniel E. Callahan III of Woburn, and Stephen J. Callahan of Weymouth; a daughter, Elizabeth Callahan of Newton; a sister, Mary Reynolds of Fort Pierce, Florida; and three grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Catherine of Siena Church, with burial to follow in Highland Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Research Fund, c/o John Growdon, Massachusetts General Hospital, ACC830, Boston, MA 02114.
