May Day was about 40 minutes old (Daylight Saving Time) when the stork made Mr and Mrs William Dequette of 21 Folan ave, this town, proud parents an unusually lucky, eight-pound baby girl. The birth caused great rejoicing and was eagerly awaited for there was a contest between three expectant mothers who had hoped to win many prizes for their new arrivals. In connection with the celebration of Baby Week, a number of Norwood merchants had planned a contest to award prizes to the first baby born in this town in the month of May. They pooled enough things together last a newcomer many months. Included in the prizes were quart of Grade A milk a day for a week or more, silk bathrobe, bassinet, shoes, stockings, a carriage and about everything else a youngster would need during its early days.
Three mothers were scheduled to be visited the stork, today. Indications were Thomas Wallace (Kay John Hyatt), daughter of Maj Gen W. Hyatt, aid of Gen Clarence W. Edwards for many years, would be the winner. Her husband is a brother-in-law of ExFrank G. Allen.
The town watched for the movements of the stork last night with much excitement. The mystic hour of 12 had just passed when the “old bird” was seen hovering about town. At 12:40 suddenly swooped down over the Dequette home and presented the folks with a pretty little girl. The honors were immediately claimed.
Dr Charles Lynch and Miss Katherine Kingman, district nurse, carefully checked their watches with those of the happy father. Other timepieces in the house vere also consulted and 12:40 was the actual time. Four hours and 15 minutes later, or at 5:05, the stork soared into the Norwood Hospital and presented Mrs Luke Ryan of 35 Summit av with a nine-pound baby boy. He then made his departure temporarily, but is soon expected to return to the Wallace home.
