The sun beamed down on the Town Common as the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs hosted a colorful, high-spirited “Jail Day” event on October 6, 1975, as part of Norwood’s ongoing Bicentennial celebrations.
The festivities kicked off with club members dressed in home-sewn colonial militia gear and their wives wearing Dolly Madison-style dresses, parading through the town center accompanied by the award-winning Norwood High School band.
Kangaroo Court and Mock Offenses
The centerpiece of the day was a light-hearted kangaroo court where residents and club members participated in mock trial proceedings. Presiding over the makeshift dock were two white-wigged magistrates, Ted Trilling and Tom DiFrancia, who handed down humorous fines—often settled with a mere $2 or $3—to anyone brought before them.
The charges levied by participants against one another were as varied as they were inventive:
- United States Marine Staff Sgt. George T. Curtis was hauled in for “being AWOL”.
- Norwood Times editor John J. Cook faced a mock $2,000 fine for “not publishing every week.”
- Firefighter John Collins was found guilty of the local “capital offense” of “hating the Bruins and Bobby Orr.”
- Lillian Adelson was penalized for “cheating at Bingo.”
- Kiwanis member Lou Valentine was charged with the serious infraction of working on Sunday.
The pillory drew steady attention throughout the day as prominent locals were locked inside for their playful transgressions. Even temporary mechanical breakdowns of the paddy wagons borrowed from the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office failed to dampen the mood, as club members quickly improvised by transporting “offenders” in private cars.
Community Spirit and Charitable Goals
Organizers hoped the lighthearted fundraiser would net around $1,000 for charitable causes supported by the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs. Sigismund Slucha, chairman of the local Marine Recruiters’ Office, expressed confidence that the community reception would make Jail Day an enduring annual tradition.
Drawing residents from all walks of life to linger and laugh on a sunny autumn afternoon, Jail Day proved to be a vibrant testament to the community camaraderie that defined Norwood during its Bicentennial era.
