Half-Century Legacy of Community Journalism and Advocacy
John J. Cook, editor and founder of the Norwood Times weekly newspaper, passed away Monday at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at the age of 76 due to complications from a brain tumor.
For 50 years, Cook served as a pillar of local independent journalism in Norwood. Operating the paper at times entirely single-handedly, he earned a widespread reputation for fairness, tenacious reporting, and championing local interests. Through his popular front-page column, “It Seems to Me,” Cook regularly scrutinized municipal spending and gave voice to ordinary residents.
“He wanted to represent the underdog,” town meeting member Bill Phipps remarked at a recent testimonial honoring Cook. “He wanted to use his paper to give people a choice, a platform from which he could speak on their behalf.” Cook’s community impact extended far beyond the editorial page; notably, when he publicized an appeal to find a bone marrow donor for a local child battling cancer, more than 4,000 people responded.
Lifelong Dedication and Family Collaboration
A proud graduate of Norwood High School, Cook served in the U.S. Army in California during World War II. Following his military service, he spent four years working for the Norwood Messenger before borrowing $4,000 in 1948 to establish the Times. “He knew what he wanted to do with his life, and he did just that,” Phipps reflected. “He may not have made a lot of money, but he certainly had a lot of fun and personal satisfaction.”
Even in his final months while battling illness, Cook continued to produce the newspaper with the steadfast assistance of his wife, Joan Cook, alongside contributions from local residents and officials, including Town Manager John Carroll. Funeral services for Mr. Cook were held earlier today.
