Police arrested 44-year-old Walenty C. Gil last night in connection with the brutal stabbing deaths of his estranged wife, Maria A. Gil, and her boyfriend, Frank Doherty, which occurred one week ago at the Dundulis’ Lunch luncheonette and bar located at 1118 Washington Street in South Norwood.

Gil was taken into custody at the same establishment where the crimes occurred, shortly after he was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder.

Police Chief George DiBlasi reported that Gil offered no resistance when officers arrived to arrest him. He is currently being held at the Dedham County Jail without bail pending his arraignment scheduled for today.

Evidence and Investigation

Authorities had focused on Gil as a primary suspect from the beginning of the investigation. However, officials indicated they were unable to formally charge him until forensic analysts completed their study of a bloody shoe-print featuring a distinct tread pattern discovered at the crime scene, alongside evidence recovered from the suspect’s vehicle trunk. Police spokesperson Joseph Tessicini emphasized the forensic findings, noting, “It will be an important piece of evidence at the trial.” In total, investigators reportedly followed up on nearly 100 leads during the intensive week-long probe into the slayings.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Banks stated that investigators have not ruled out jealousy as a potential motive for the killings. Maria Gil, a twice-unsuccessful candidate for town selectman, managed and owned the Washington Street bar and resided above the establishment with her 17-year-old son and Doherty, 51.

Prior Encounters with Law Enforcement

The arrest follows a series of recent run-ins between Gil and the police. On the day of the murders, Gil was questioned by investigators at his South Boston home. During that encounter, he allegedly attacked a Boston patrolman, leading to charges of assault and battery. While being transported to the police station following that incident, Gil reportedly kicked out a window of the police cruiser, resulting in an additional charge of destruction of property. He was subsequently released on $5,000 bail in that case, awaiting a court appearance at the time of his indictment for the murders. (Reporting by Diane Derby, The Patriot Ledger).
