Free Alcohol Awareness Seminars for Local Liquor Licensees-August 29, 1994

Scheduled to take place in November ahead of the heavy holiday social season, the single-session, three-hour courses are jointly sponsored by the Board of Health and the Police Department, with organizational guidance provided by the Governor’s Highway Safety Bureau.

Curriculum and Community Support

Board of Health member Jean Taylor emphasized the necessity of proactive training, noting that holiday celebrations frequently lead to excessive drinking. “There are daily tragedies of persons being served too much alcohol,” Taylor said. “It’s a problem in all communities.”

The curriculum is designed to address pressing operational challenges faced by local liquor license holders, including:

• Techniques for detecting fake or altered driver’s licenses and identifying underage patrons.
• Best practices for recognizing visibly intoxicated customers and responsibly cutting off service.
• Reviews of local municipal bylaws and state liquor regulations.

The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved the initiative with a 5-0 vote last week. Selectman John Kinnaly voiced immediate support for the measure, stating, “Any help we can get regarding liquor, I go along with it.” Health Board member Kathy Hickson originally brought the program to the town’s attention after learning about the free advisory resources offered by the state’s Highway Safety Bureau.
