The Star Market on Nahatan Street was closed this morning because of possible food contamination caused by smoke from an early morning fire in a storeroom. Town Health Inspector Phyllis Boucher ordered the store closed and called in a state health inspector to survey the damage to food supplies.

“I can’t say how long the store will remain closed. That will depend on what items the state inspector determines have been contaminated by the smoke,” Boucher said. She said there was no question that items in the produce locker, where there was thick smoke, were contaminated.

Star Market officials said they hoped to have the store open before the end of the day. Firefighters had the blaze under control within minutes of their arrival just before 5:30 a.m., Fire Chief Thomas Barry said.

Barry said firefighters were alerted to the fire by the store’s automatic alarm. Flames were confined to a section of the storeroom roughly 12 feet by 20 feet, Barry said. Three of the store’s automatic sprinklers had been set off before firefighters arrived, he said. The fire started in an area where health and beauty supplies are stored.
