Rehabilitating Patients with Speech Impairments Stemming from Strokes, Illness, and Injury
For most individuals, speaking normally is an unconscious everyday action. But when an accident, illness, or medical shock results in a sudden speech deformity, the immediate reaction is profound frustration and depression. Stepping in to help patients regain their voice is Dr. Karen Jaffe Goldstein, recently appointed staff speech pathologist at Norwood Hospital.
Splitting her time between hospital casework—treating both bedridden inpatients and outpatients—and her private practice at home, Dr. Goldstein works with patients of all ages facing a wide spectrum of communication disorders. Her caseload encompasses stuttering, voice disorders, learning disabilities, cleft palates, and neurological conditions affecting speech, such as Parkinson’s disease and stroke recovery.
“The goal is to rehabilitate as much as possible and help each person to communicate again,” Dr. Goldstein explained in her hospital office. Emphasizing that healing extends beyond the patient alone, she actively incorporates family members into the therapy process: “I feel very strongly that the family must be involved. They must understand the problems. Their sympathetic support is essential.”
While speech therapy is notoriously gradual, Dr. Goldstein finds deep fulfillment in the small victories: “As we make progress, it is very satisfying to see a patient smile, to see a patient walk out happy, to see a patient able to do something he couldn’t do yesterday.”
Medical Background, Academic Research, and Balanced Family Life
Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, as the daughter of a surgeon, Dr. Goldstein was immersed in a medical environment focused on helping others from an early age. Her extensive academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Science: Speech pathology and audiology from Emerson College (1969).
- Master’s Degree: Education from Northeastern University.
- Doctorate: Speech pathology from Boston University, featuring a doctoral dissertation centered on cleft palate research and interdisciplinary team treatment approaches.
Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Goldstein maintains a prolific professional schedule. She is currently editing a textbook on speech pathology and audiology for Little Brown & Co. Though formally scheduled at Norwood Hospital just two days a week, her heavy caseload frequently extends her hours.
Balancing a demanding career with family life, she is married to Dr. Melvin E. Goldstein—an anesthesiologist on the staff at Cambridge Hospital and chief of anesthesia at the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Brighton—with whom she shares two sons, ages 8 and 3. Despite her professional commitments, she preserves time for lifelong passions, including playing the piano (having previously studied at the Longy School of Music and played in the New Haven Junior Symphony Orchestra) and competitive athletics, having formerly ranked fifth in New England in junior tennis.
