The sweltering summer evening of July 20, 1977, witnessed a masterclass display of pitching prowess as Paul Yelapi led the Norwood American Legion baseball team to a resounding 5-1 victory over their Walpole counterparts. The game marked a significant milestone in the Zone 6A tournament, with Norwood securing a flawless 7-0 record and Walpole slipping to 6-1.

As the sun began to set on the picturesque Walpole grounds, the air was electric with anticipation. Coaches from both teams had been effusive in their praise for Yelapi’s exceptional pitching skills, and it soon became apparent why. The Norwood hurler was in rare form, confounding the Walpole batters with a dazzling array of pitches that left them struggling to make contact.

Walpole coach Ralph White acknowledged as much, stating, “Yelapi pitched an excellent game. He was tough. We just couldn’t put anything together against him.” The Norwood mentor, Marty Kuporatz, concurred, remarking, “Yelapi is something else. He threw the ball into left field. Not exactly a powerful display of hitting, but nonetheless a run scored.”

The first half of the game saw Norwood playing a solid brand of baseball, with their batters managing to put together some decent at-bats against Walpole’s Joe O’Halloran. However, as the innings progressed, it became clear that Yelapi was the dominant force on the mound. He allowed just five hits throughout the game, including a pop fly double to Kevin Moore and a two-out single by Dave Johnson.

The Norwood offense, meanwhile, was led by Brian Johnson, who batted three-for-three with a towering triple down the left-field line that proved to be the decisive blow in the seventh inning. Chris Collins also contributed with a blooped single to start the inning, which ultimately resulted in two runs crossing the plate.

The game’s turning point came in the third inning when Yelapi led off with a single to right field and Johnson followed with a bunt that O’Halloran fielded high to third. The resulting no-out, bases-full situation proved too much for Walpole to handle, as Norwood capitalized on the opportunity to take a 3-0 lead.

As the game drew to a close, Yelapi continued to shut down the Walpole offense, yielding only one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Despite their valiant efforts, the Walpole batters simply couldn’t get the better of the Norwood pitcher, who ultimately emerged victorious with a 5-1 win.

The victory marked a significant milestone for the Norwood American Legion team, which had been playing good baseball all season. As Kuporatz noted, “We’ve been playing good ball this half. We’re a completely different club.” The team’s success was largely due to Yelapi’s exceptional pitching, which had become a hallmark of their performances throughout the Zone 6A tournament.

The July 20, 1977, matchup between Norwood and Walpole American Legion baseball teams is remembered as a testament to Yelapi’s remarkable pitching skills.
