ROME (UPI) — Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, and Rt. Rev. Robert Sennott, pastor of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Norwood, Mass., were received in a private audience today by Pope Paul VI in the Vatican Papal Chambers.
Vatican Visit and Accompanying Delegation
The pontiff had notified Cardinal Cushing on Thursday that he would grant the audience today. Accompanying the prelate for the papal visit were Rev. Charles Von Euw of St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Rev. Robert Quinn of the Paulist Center in Boston, and Rt. Rev. Edward Murray, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Boston’s Roslindale section. Additionally, four Boston-area students currently attending the American North College in Rome were included in the delegation.
Following the audience, Cardinal Cushing attended sessions of the Ecumenical Council. Later in the day, he received carved marble busts of himself and the late President John F. Kennedy presented by two small churches located in the hill town of Varsi.

Born in Salem on April 15, 1867, he was educated at St. James Parish School, Salem High School, Boston College, and St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, graduating in 1894. His ministry began as assistant pastor in Holbrook, followed by 17 years at St. Edward’s Church in Montello, and later assignments in Brockton and Hopkinton.
