Norwood Welcomes Home Fallen Marine Cpl. Frederick T. Deeb with Solemn Military Honors
First Repatriated Norwood War Hero Arrives at Central Station
The body of Corporal Frederick T. Deeb, USMC—Norwood’s first repatriated war hero, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Marshall Islands early in 1944—was scheduled to arrive this afternoon at 4:41 p.m. at the Norwood Central station. Community leaders and military organizations organized the solemn arrival to pay tribute not only to Corporal Deeb but also to serve as a symbolic day of remembrance for all of the town’s fallen servicemen from World War II.
Upon arrival at the depot, a dedicated Marine Corps League detail rendered full military honors, escorting the fallen Marine’s remains to Warabow’s Funeral Parlor.
Lying in State at Memorial Hall and Historic Funeral Procession
The funeral arrangements encompass extensive community-wide tributes spanning multiple days:
- Wednesday Home Viewing: Corporal Deeb’s remains will be brought to the home of his mother, Mrs. Ester Deeb, at 112 Cedar Street, remaining there until 3:30 p.m.
- Lying in State: From the family home, the casket will be escorted to Memorial Hall, where he will lie in state until Friday at 1:00 p.m. The Marine Corps League requested that all community floral tributes be sent directly to Memorial Hall.
- Procession and Church Services: On Friday afternoon, a full military procession will proceed along Washington Street to St. George’s Syrian Orthodox Church in South Norwood for formal religious services.
- Highland Cemetery Burial: Following the church service, mourners will travel by vehicle to the entrance of Highland Cemetery, dismounting to march on foot to the graveside for final military and religious rites.
Commander Robert Stewart Calls for Downtown Business Curtailed Operation
Emphasizing the profound historic weight of the occasion, Marine Corps League Commander Robert Stewart issued a public statement urging local merchants to honor the fallen Marine: “The highest town tribute possible is being paid to our first dead Norwood son to return. This is fitting because he represents our thoughts at the time of all our hero[es] dead. With this thought in mind, I request that all merchants along the route of procession on Friday curtail their business establishments as the funeral cortège passes along Washington Street to South Norwood.”
